Royal & Derngate says it has no confirmed reopening date for the Northampton Filmhouse after yesterday's announcement that cinemas could partially open from July 4.

In a statement issued this afternoon, a spokesperson for the Filmhouse said it was not straightforward for smaller, independent cinemas such as theirs.

"While we are thrilled that we can start the next stage of the planning process to reopen our doors, we are aware that this might not be the best option for many independent cinemas like ourselves.

"The social distancing and safety measures, so essential for audiences and staff members, bring some challenges for intimate screens like ours – both physically and financially.

"We want to take the time to ensure we can make the necessary adjustments to the buildings and preserve the distinctive Filmhouse experience which makes it so loved amongst our audiences.

"We cannot confirm a re-opening date at present but we will update via our website and social media channels as soon as we have more information. We will also send our info via our email list- if you haven’t already signed up you can do so here.

"It goes without saying that we can’t wait to welcome you back to the Filmhouse when we can," the spokesperson added.
