A group of people in Northampton have come together to make a little boy’s lockdown birthday special.

Teddy, who turned six on St George’s Day (April 23), thought he was not going to have a birthday at all due to the lockdown.

But members of the Royal British Legion (RBL) Duston and District branch and the wider community made sure this was not the case by organising a number of surprises for Teddy’s birthday.

Darrin Stevens, who is part of Duston’s RBL and helped to organise Teddy’s birthday, even managed to get the ‘friendly, local Spiderman’ to visit the young boy.

Darrin said: “Everybody came together and it was a great morning.

“We all stayed apart of course, but made sure Teddy had a birthday.

“It’s not about us, it’s about a little boy who thought he would not have a birthday.

“We have all been there and there are a lot of children in a similar position at the moment.

“We managed to make a difference to one of them. We couldn’t have asked for any more.

“It’s a great thing that a little six-year-old boy will never forget, he said it was ‘the best birthday ever’ and that ‘Spiderman is now my best friend’.”

On his special birthday, Teddy received a home-made cake donated from Fay’s Bakes, a gift donated from Argos and a visit from a real-life Spiderman.

Local councillors Shaun Pape and Sandie Maitland and RBL members also donated money to make sure Teddy received presents and cards.

Rachel, Teddy’s mum, said: “He was miserable to start with because he thought he wouldn’t have a birthday.

“But when Spiderman came it made his day, it made his life, he has been so happy since.

“I just really want to say thank you to everybody who made it special, it really made such a difference to Teddy.”

Teddy’s grandfather also thanked the RBL for its generosity and ‘heroic efforts’.

He said: “I would like to express my heart-felt gratitude for the help you are selflessly giving to Rachel. You may not realise just what an incredible lifeline your kindness is giving her. You truly are amazing people.”
