‘Bhaji bonus’ as Northampton curry house raises £310 for local charity

An award-winning Northampton curry house has raised £310 for The Lowdown – thanks to hungry diners who marked British Curry Day by tucking into dozens of onion bhajis.

Saffron, in Castilian Street, took part in the first-ever ‘British Curry Day’ on Thursday, December 3 – a day celebrating the pioneers of a cuisine that has gone on to become part and parcel of our everyday lives.

The restaurant donated all proceeds from the sale of onion bhajis on the day to The Lowdown, the choice of Mayor of Northampton Councillor Brian Sargeant as his charity of the year, and matched the total raised to take it up to a total of £310.

Saffron owner Naz Islam said: “British curry has become a national institution and this was the perfect way to celebrate a vital part of our heritage while raising money for a terrific cause.”

The Lowdown, based in Kingswell Street, Northampton, is a voluntary mental health charity, providing free and confidential counselling, emotional wellbeing, sexual health and LGBTQ support services for 11-25 year olds.

Mayor of Northampton, Cllr Brian Sargeant said: “This very generous donation will make a real difference to the lives of young people in Northampton. It’s a wonderful gesture.”
