Major scouting celebration to bring over 400 young people together in Northampton later this month
A major scouting celebration is set to bring more than 400 young people together in Northampton later this month.
Lou Ousley has been scouting for 25 years and is organising this event at Overstone Scout Ground on April 25 in her role as district programme team leader and social media manager.
Having held these roles for a year and three years respectively, Lou’s focus is putting on accessible events for the different age groups or bringing them together as a collective.
Talking about the impact of scouting on the young people of this town, Lou told the Chronicle & Echo: “It’s absolutely amazing and I’m lucky to be part of one of the largest youth organisations in Northampton.

“It gives young people freedom, social interaction and the chance to explore the outdoors. The scout centre in Overstone is home to adventurous activities and our tagline ‘skills for life’ is what we are about.
“Our inclusive groups have helped children with socialisation and friendships. There is one young person who went on a week-long residential trip with school and a parent said they couldn’t have done that without scouting.”
An annual event is hosted to celebrate St George and with many milestones and birthdays coinciding with it this year, there will be a “massive party” taking place at Overstone Scout Ground at the end of the month.
With around 430 set to enjoy the team games, crafts, climbing, campfire foods and party atmosphere, this accounts for half of the young people scouting across the town.

“We scout weekly in our own groups in different places around the town and come together,” said Lou. “They develop a sense of adventure, creativity and connection. This celebration reminds us what scouting is all about – fun, friends and adventure – and it helps us renew our promise.”
Lou described Northampton District Scouts as “ever-growing” and with around 150 people on a waiting list, they are always on the look out for more adult volunteers. Anyone willing to offer their support to make a difference to the lives of young people is urged to get in touch.
