A Northampton charity hopes to make this year’s annual Christmas present pick their biggest and best yet, with a target of helping 500 families this festive season.

The Spring Charity, which aims to help families in the NN1 area to thrive, gave away 418 presents ahead of the big day in 2024 – which marked the third year of the initiative.

Every year, families are invited to pick free presents from the hundreds that are donated as some may not be able to afford much for their children otherwise.

The Spring Charity team begins collecting donations of new toys and gifts every July, and they are well on their way to helping families experiencing financial difficulties this year.

This initiative ensures every child wakes up to something special on Christmas morning, and the charity is collecting new and unwrapped gifts for children aged newborn to 16.

Alice Hudson has been manager at The Spring Charity since July, having worked for the organisation since May the previous year.

When asked what makes The Spring Charity such a special organisation, Alice told the Chronicle & Echo: “It’s located right in the heart of Spring Boroughs and people pop in everyday.

“We build genuine relationships with everyone who comes to the centre and they access groups depending on their needs. The Spring Charity brings people together.”

A recent piece of feedback from an attendee expressed how comfortable and relaxed she feels coming along, and to be surrounded by friendly individuals who show genuine interest.

She recommended the group to anyone who feels anxious and wants to build confidence, particularly those with toddlers who can often feel isolated.

“The annual Christmas present pick is really important,” said Alice. “There’s so much pressure to get your child a present at Christmas, and this is done with dignity like a shop. It’s a fun experience that brings everyone together.

“It might reach someone who hasn’t heard of us before and once they’re in the door, they’ll come back again.”

As well as present donations, The Spring Charity also accepts wrapping paper, cellotape and scissors – as this ensures everything is sorted for a family ahead of Christmas morning.

When asked how much it would mean to her and the team if they were to exceed last year’s total of 418 and reach 500 presents, Alice said: “We’d all be so proud of everybody that has helped those families have a lovely Christmas. We all look forward to this time of year.”

The Spring Charity is accepting donation drop-offs any weekday morning and you can take a look at their Amazon wishlist here.
