A local non-profit organisation is appealing for help from the public to go above and beyond with its Christmas hamper appeal this year.

Earth’s Lonely Angels, which has applied for charity status, is a team of volunteers who make it their mission to reach local people who may be lonely, whether that is vulnerable older people or those who are homeless.

Each year the group makes and delivers Christmas hampers filled with food and drink, warm clothes, magazines and anything to spread festive joy to those who need it most.

Aine Cullen, Earth’s Lonely Angels founder, said: “We target places where we know vulnerable adults live and they are always blown away by the hampers.

“They’re reactions are great and some even cry with happiness.

“It’s a magical thing to do as Christmas really brings out the best of people.

“You can make a hamper at home and you know it’s not for you or someone you know, it’s for a stranger who will really appreciate it.

“And children can let elderly people know they are thinking of them this Christmas time.

“This is what we can do if we work together. It’s a powerful message.”

When the campaign was first launched six years ago, 92 hampers were made and delivered to elderly residents in Briar Hill.

Over the years, the scheme has grown and extended to other parts of the town, as businesses and schools have also been involved.

Last year, the team delivered 1,000 hampers, but this year they want to do one better and send out at least 2,000 packages and to do this they need your help.

Aine added: “Last year was amazing, but this year we want to double it.

“We know with the public’s help we can do it.

“This year we will support families affected by Covid as well as vulnerable adults and homeless. We do not have to cancel it.

“This has been a rubbish year for many people and it is needed now more than ever.

“If possible, we can make more than 2,000 and deliver to not just Northampton, but elsewhere in the county too.

“This is something to be proud of and everybody can get involved in it.”

The team is asking members of the public to ‘think kind and think green’ by collecting items that can be put in a reused cardboard box and wrapped in recyclable wrapping paper.

All hampers need to be donated by December 5. The team of volunteers will then deliver all hampers before December 23.
