In pictures: Northampton care home residents make 450 poppies from recycled bottles for Remembrance Day display

The residents have been working hard on crafting the poppies since the middle of September

A group of care home residents have created a stunning Remembrance Day display using poppies handmade from recycled plastic bottles.

Residents who live at Nazareth House in Harlestone Road have been crafting and painting the poppies once a week since the middle and September.

Between them, with some help from family who have taken part at home, they have managed to make around 450 poppies, which are now displayed outisde the care home for passers-by to see.

Leon McAnally, activities and wellbeing co-ordinator at the home, said: "Remembrance Day is a very meaningful thing for the residents so we wanted to do something a bit out there.

"We have discussions about the news and there has been a lot about climate change, so we thought we'd go down the environmental route and we thought the plastic poppies would be weather proof.

"The resident's families have also been involved in the project. Some have made poppies and one did the silhouette too.

"It has been really nice and because the residents know their family are involved it has brought them together, while they aren't seeing each other during the pandemic."

For many residents, making the poppies also brought to the surface their own memories of loved ones who have fought in wars, which they were encouraged to share with others.

Leon added: "The residents are really happy and thrilled with how it has turned out.

"We even had a note from someone who saw the display to say how lovely it was, which is really touching for the residents."

Care home staff are already talking about ideas for a similar project next year.

Below are pictures of this year's display, which can be found on the front of the care home.
