Public service workers swap Northamptonshire day jobs for falconry experience to boost wellbeing

A group of Northamptonshire public service workers swapped their usual workplaces for a day of falconry as part of efforts to support their wellbeing.

Twenty-five UNISON members from across the county took part in a Falconry Experience at Icarus Falconry, based at Holdenby House, on Friday, August 21.

The event formed part of a year-round programme organised by UNISON branches across Northamptonshire, aimed at giving members the chance to step away from the pressures of working life, try something new and build relationships with colleagues.

Those taking part praised the experience, with one saying they had “learnt so much” in a safe and friendly environment.

Another said: “The staff at Icarus put members’ fears at ease and gave an insight into the birds’ behaviours, characteristics and personalities.”

Paul Meadows, UNISON East Midlands union learning rep and West Northants branch secretary, said: “In this busy world, people often forget about their own wellbeing. We give them the opportunity to prioritise this.

“Happy people work better in the workplace. Many employers do support the wellbeing of their staff but do not put this into practice by organising such events.

“It is such a joy to see people interacting and supporting each other. It makes belonging to UNISON worthwhile.”

Other courses being organised for members across Northamptonshire this year cover subjects including grief and menopause awareness, artificial intelligence, interview skills, debt support, violence against women and girls and imposter syndrome.

There are also Christmas wreath-making sessions and radical history walks.

The activities are organised by UNISON members working in public services, including healthcare assistants, school support staff, home carers, social workers and paramedics.
