Number of deaths in Northampton was double in April compared to average of last five years

The number of people who died in Northampton was double last month compared to the average over the last five years.

The Chronicle & Echo has been reporting on the daily figures of Covid-19 deaths at Northampton General Hospital throughout the pandemic.

However, the latest figures come from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and are for the borough of Northampton. They show the number of deaths from all causes, not just Covid-19.

Over the last five years, the average number of people who had died in April was 160. The number of deaths in April this year was 325. ONS state that this figure is provisional.

The figures show a difference of 165, an increase of 103% on the average.

This is replicated across the county as a whole. In April this year, 1,053 people died in Northamptonshire compared to an average over the last five years of 548, an increase of 505 or 92%.

Elsewhere in the region, there was a 147% increase in Milton Keynes with 375 deaths in April this year compared to an average of 152 over the last five years.

In Peterborough, the increase was less at 76% with 217 deaths, compared to an average of 123.
