In a statement by the borough's Lib Dem party, Mr Meredith has shared how, at 78, he was considered 'at risk' by doctors and also developed pneumonia while overcoming the infection.

He said “This is a nasty disease. [My wife] Rona and I were lucky, at our age it could have been much, much worse. But the NHS is fantastic and put me on the road to recovery.

“Please, everyone, do what we are being told by the government’s medical advisors – remember the two-metre rule with people outside your ‘bubble’, wear a mask, wash your hands and be careful”.

He also emphasised the danger of younger people infecting their elderly relatives, saying: "“Don’t take Covid home to your parents or grandparents. It

can be so much more serious for them”.
