The University of Northampton has made the decision to remain closed until the end of May.

Face-to-face teaching was suspended on March 20, in line with Government advice on the coronavirus pandemic.

The initial closure that was announced before the lockdown was implemented and went on to include restricted access to the university buildings, was planned to be lifted on Monday April 20.

Due to the continued lockdown and social distancing measures, the university has now made the decision to extend the closure until Friday May 29, which is subject to change depending on the circumstances.

A spokesman for the university said: “One of the largest factors to our decision to suspend face-to-face activities before the lockdown was announced was the decision to close schools.

“We knew this would make life very difficult for a good proportion of staff and students with childcare responsibilities, and affect our ability to be able to deliver key facilities or services.

“It is unlikely children will return to school until at least after the May half term holiday so we want to make decisions now that will support everyone in the future.”

“We recognise that there are exceptions – for example if programmes feed directly into front line health services – and our staff are working hard ensuring these students are supported throughout very challenging times.”

Other university events and commercial activities have been suspended until at least June or July, to ensure the site and activities can be managed safely.
