An outbreak of Covid-19 has been confirmed at a waste management company in Northampton.

Voeila has confirmed that a 'small number' of employees at the site in Edgar Mobbs Way in St James' have tested positive for the virus.

Employees at the company contacted Chronicle & Echo to express concerns that they were expected to work despite believing they had been in close contact with those who had tested positive, due to a 'lack of trace and trace'. Colleagues were fearful they would lose their jobs if they did not attend.

The company, however, disputes these claims and says contact tracing is in place.

A Veolia spokeswoman said: "Following an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the area, we can confirm that a small number of colleagues have tested positive for the virus and are now self isolating in line with government guidance.

"Those affected have taken part in contact tracing and the appropriate measures, including self isolation, are in place.

"Veolia have liaised closely with Public Health England (PHE) who are supportive of the rigorous controls and measures that have been established since the beginning of the pandemic.

"The health and wellbeing of our colleagues is a top priority and we have a range of control measures in places to protect our colleagues in the workplace."
