A GP surgery in Northamptonshire was among one of the first to receive a load of scrubs made by volunteers from across the county.

Towcester Medical Centre was given 20 sets of scrubs made by the Scrub Up for Northants NHS group on Friday (April 17).

Practice manager Karen Wheeler said if they had gone to their regular scrubs supplier, they would still be waiting as the demand is so high, so they are grateful to the volunteers.

"The scrubs are great quality and we're very thankful for their hard work - we now have enough sets for all of our doctors and nurses," she said.

The Covid-19 pandemic has increased the demand for scrubs as anyone wearing personal protective equipment to treat patients needs to wear them underneath and to make medical centres more hygienic.

Scrub Up for Northants NHS was set up earlier this month to mobilise the county's seamstresses to make gowns, hats, scrub bags and more.

Around 500 sewers have volunteered so far as well as many others to cut fabric or organise orders, while more than £7,600 has been donated online.

South Northants organiser for the volunteers, Andrea Marques, said more materials and donations are needed to keep up with demand during the coronavirus crisis.

"They will need more and around Towcester and Brackley, there's a huge amount more needed for GPs alone," she said.
