Police shut down Corby VE Day party with ‘50 people and a bouncy castle’ after surge in Covid calls

A Corby street party involving up to 50 people and bouncy castles in the street was shut down by police yesterday (Friday, May 8).

Officers responded to complaints after some residents of Morland and Millais Road on the Hazel Leys estate decided to defy lockdown rules and set up an entire street party featuring a bouncy castle.

Police shut down the party and residents were ordered to return to their homes. It is not yet known if any fines were issued.

Many residents across our county held responsible street events yesterday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day, with most people sticking to their own gardens.

But some couldn’t resist the temptation to break the law.

Local Police Area Commander Chief Supertindent Chris Hillery said on social media that there had been a big surge I the number of Covid-19 calls to the force control room.

Urging people to stay at home He said: “Today we have had over 1,000 calls, 50 per cent reporting Covid breaches!

“Disappointing but no surprise, a second wave of infection will push the NHS and many others beyond capacity.”

Lockdown has now been in force for nearly six weeks and this week speculation has mounted that tight restrictions might be eased after the weekend.

But the government has warned that there will be no major changes to the law put in place to protect NHS capacity and save lives.
