Mayor of Northampton thanks volunteers who have helped more than 1,000 people during the pandemic

From helping with a neighbour’s shopping to getting in touch for a chat, volunteers have turned their hand to whatever was needed

A special ‘thank you’ message has been issued from the Mayor of Northampton to the army of volunteers who have helped vulnerable people during the pandemic.

Letters have been sent out to the town’s voluntary organisations and individuals who have supported more than 1,100 vulnerable people during the last five months.

Together with Northampton Borough Council, the army of volunteers has helped the community in number of ways by delivering food parcels or personal protective equipment, picking up neighbour’s shopping, providing emotional, mental health and wellbeing support, collecting prescription medication or by getting in touch for a friendly chat.

The Mayor of Northampton, Councillor Brian Sergeant, said: “On behalf of Northampton Borough Council, I would like to thank everyone who has helped over the past five months volunteering and supporting our local community.

“Faced with an unprecedented pandemic, the community has risen to the challenge and we have seen fantastic displays of generosity, community spirit and dedication.

“Thousands of people have come forward to support those affected by the lockdown in a variety of ways. Our volunteers have helped thousands of people, making a real difference to their ability to stay safe and well.

“The work we have begun through the pandemic has helped form a more inclusive Northampton and we will work to maintain and strengthen that. Thank you for being such an amazing community and we hope in the not too distant future we can all come together again.”
