Chris Pentland, the duo's youngest son, said: "It is because of mum and dad’s inner strength and the amazing care given to them by staff at Wardington Court and Northampton General Hospital that he has beaten Covid-19 and they are at home with each other again."

John and Peggy's other son, Steve Pentland, said the family thinks Peggy might have also had coronavirus but she was never tested.

“This is nothing short of a miracle," he added. "He lived through the Blitz of London 80 years ago, was married in 1947, and he brushes off cancer and strokes. Now they both had and survived Covid-19. Hope I’ve got their genes!”

She added: "I am absolutely thrilled that grandad has beaten Covid-19 and has been reunited with the love of his life, grandma Peggy.

"He’s a toughie. He’s survived a world war, cancer, a stroke and now coronavirus. I’m so proud to have such amazing grandparents and when it’s safe to do so, I can’t wait to go round and tell him how amazing he is.

"I am so grateful to the NHS, Northampton General Hospital and Wardington Court Retirement Living for the wonderful care they have given him. Hurrah for grandad Pentland."
