Government figures reveal coronavirus cases are rising fastest in small towns and villages

These NHS figures show how small towns and rural areas are fuelling rises in Covid-19 cases in Northamptonshire.

Analysts added 87 new positive tests to the county's tally on Wednesday, making 464 in the last five days.

East Northamptonshire now has the highest rate of infection among the county's six boroughs and districts with around 82 new cases per 100,000 of the population in the last week.

Official numbers show Higham Ferrers, Rushden, Thrapston and Oundle are all areas reporting most new cases using postcodes of those tested.

Analysts divide the country into small areas each with average populations of 7,200 to compare the spread of Covid-19.

Desborough currently tops the Northamptonshire list with a dozen cases in the last week.

Higham Ferrers and Rushden South both reported 11 cases while four more areas in East Northants have seen a combined 54 cases.

Of those, only Thrapston and Brigstock had seen more than two positive tests in the previous week.

By contrast, New Duston East and Delapre are the only areas of Northampton with six or more cases.

Parts of Liverpool and Greater Manchester — where strict measures are in force to prevent households mixing — have seen more than 100 cases in the last week.
