Wellingborough s community Covid-19 test centre has opened aiming to identify people carrying the virus but don't know it.

The site at Redwell Leisure Centre, which was delayed by problems with a heating system, uses lateral flow devices designed for those WITHOUT symptoms.

It is the fourth centre of its kind in Northamptonshire, alongside those in Northampton, Corby and Brackley, delivering results in around half-an-hour.

Dr Rhosyn Harris, consultant in Public Health at Northamptonshire County Council, said: "We know from our existing sites that regular testing of those without symptoms helps us identify a number of positive cases and cut the transmission by isolating those individuals.

"It also provides workforces with some reassurance that workers are less likely to transmit the virus without knowing."

Covid cases in Wellingborough have dropped by more than half during the last week, according to Government figures.

But officials insist testing is key to continuing that trend as lockdown restrictions are eased.

In particular, those working in health or social care, transport, education, retail or warehousing and other public sector areas are encouraged to get tested regularly to reduce risks of unknowingly passing on the virus.

Businesses are also being encouraged to set up their own testing through a Government scheme.

Those WITH Covid-19 symptoms — high temperature, new or continuous cough, or a loss of change in sense of taste — should book via the government website HERE or by calling the national booking line on 119.

Rapid tests at any of the four Northamptonshire centres must be booked in advance HERE by those without Covid symptoms.

Redwell Leisure Centre has been closed since January but could re-open on April 12 under the Government's plan to ease lockdown restrictions revealed last month.
