An elderly man has become the second person with coronavirus to die at Northampton General Hospital.

The 78-year-old man, who had underlying health conditions, passed away yesterday (Thursday, March 26).

Matthew Metcalfe, medical director for Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, said: “Sadly we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at Northampton General Hospital, and had tested positive for Covid-19 has died.

"The patient, who died on March 26, was 78 years old and had underlying health conditions.

"His family has been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.

"We continue to follow all the appropriate infection prevention and control guidance to provide safe and effective care to our patients."

A 92-year-old man with coronavirus died at the hospital on March 16 - the first death linked to Covid-19 in the town.

As of yesterday (Thursday), 64 people in Northamptonshire have tested positive for the virus.
