A Northampton museum that normally organises an Easter egg hunt for children donated the eggs to a food bank after the hunt was cancelled.

Abington Park Museum has already bought more than a thousand eggs for the hunt when the attraction had to close due to the coronavirus pandemic.

To put the eggs to good use, staff at the museum decided to arrange for them to be delivered to Weston Favell Centre Food Bank.

Elizabeth Ravine, administrator for Northampton Museums, who contacted Weston Favell Centre Foodbank, said: “We had bought the Easter eggs some time ago in preparation for our popular Easter egg hunts at Abington Park Museum.

“Around a thousand children visit the event and when we realised we wouldn’t be able to use the eggs anymore we didn’t want them to go to waste.”

The donation meant that children from families who visited the food bank over the Easter weekend went home with a sweet treat.

Simon Burgess, Weston Favell Centre Food Bank administrator, said: “We are delighted about the generous donation the museum is giving us.

“These eggs will go to families who visit the foodbank, so every child will receive an egg at Easter.”

Councillor Anna King, cabinet member for community engagement and safety, added: “So many children visit Abington Park Museum over Easter and I’m pleased to see that whilst the event is cancelled we can hopefully put a smile on a child’s face who otherwise might not have received an egg this Easter.”
