The Mounts Medical Centre insists it has adhered to guidance from Public Health England and most appointments have been done remotely.

Dr Naomi Caldwell, GP clinical lead at Nene Clinical Commissioning Group, said: "We can confirm that a staff member at The Mounts Medical Centre in Northampton is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.

"In line with Public Health England guidance, screening is being offered to any colleagues who develop symptoms and a deep clean has already been undertaken at the practice as an extra precaution.

“The vast majority of routine GP appointments are already taking place remotely via video and telephone consultations and where patients need to be seen face-to-face, strict safety guidelines are always followed including the use of personal protective equipment.

"It’s important that everybody looks after their physical and mental health during this pandemic and people should continue to contact their GP by phone in the usual way if they need help.”

One person, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed The Mounts had also not told patients about the coronavirus case but the surgery did not commented on that.

"They did not shut the surgery or tell patients or anyone else who came into contact with the staff member who has coronavirus," the source said.

"What strikes me is their opinion that they don't need to let people know they'be had a confirmed case of coronavirus and thereby potentially putting their staff and patients at risk."
