Chris Duffy, chief executive of Age UK Northamptonshire, said: “It’s important to ensure that families and others support over 70s and make sure there is a plan in place to help and support that person at home.

“They need to make sure that neighbours know and understand what they are doing so they can look out for them.

“It is best that other people and families give up hugging one another and shaking hands too as you can carry the virus but have no symptoms.

“We are also advising loads of telephone calls and loads of contact at a distance to combat loneliness and also to make sure food and essentials are sorted.

“We are working hard to adapt our services and develop new ones for those who will need to self isolate.

“If they are worried or concerned give us a call and we will do our best to help.”

Chris said he hopes to release more information about new and adapted services in the next few days.

The Silver Line, which is a free, confidential helpline for older people has also seen more and more callers mentioning coronavirus.

The charity has now issued advice for those concerned about the virus.

Paul Goulden, director of The Silver Line said: “The recently announced news that older people will soon be asked to stay at home for up to four months make this an understandably worrying and challenging time.

“The Silver Line is committed to being there for older people during this period, and over the next few months we’ll all need to pull together to help older people.

“At The Silver Line we know what a huge difference a telephone call can make, and an increasing number of our callers are mentioning their concern about coronavirus.

“We'd urge everyone to pick up the phone and check on your older family, friends and neighbours and see how you can help.

“It’s important that we don’t forget the little things, like the reassurance of talking through the current situation with someone.

“This is bigger than any one organisation and we’ll need everyone to look out for each other and particularly those who are more at risk.
