A popular museum and community hub in Northampton has had to close its doors due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Abington Park Museum, which offers regular events and community activities, as well as displaying art, closed at 5pm last night (March 18) and will not reopen until further notice.

Northampton Borough Council has announced the decision as it follows the latest Government advice to limit non-essential travel and social contact.

Councillor Anna King, cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “We've made the difficult decision to close our doors and suspend all of our activities, events, and regular groups until further notice, but our absolute priority is the health and safety of our visitors and staff.

“We thank you for your patience and your continued support during this unpredictable time.

"Given the uncertainty we are all facing, it is not possible to say when our museum will be able to re-open to visitors.”

All current events and activities have also been cancelled.

Customers who booked a ticket on Eventbrite will be contacted directly over the coming weeks to arrange refunds.

If tickets have been booked in person, customers should email their details to [email protected] or call 01604 838111.

The museum’s oil paintings and sculpture collections are digitised and can be found on Art UK’s website.
