Young campaigners at Northampton primary school launch bid to clean up local area

Pupils at Vernon Terrace Primary School in Northampton are already making a difference in their local community after launching the school's new School Council.

The newly formed council has chosen improving the local area as its first major project, focusing on reducing litter and helping to create a cleaner, safer and more welcoming neighbourhood.

As part of the initiative, members of the School Council recently met with local ward councillors Councillor Enam Haque, Councillor Muna Cali and Councillor Fartun Ismail to discuss issues affecting the community.

The group carried out a litter survey around the area, identifying locations where rubbish and other environmental concerns could be addressed. The visit also gave pupils the opportunity to learn more about how local government works and to share their ideas directly with elected representatives.

The councillors praised the enthusiasm shown by the pupils and welcomed the chance to work alongside them on future projects.

Following the survey, the School Council is now working with the councillors and West Northamptonshire Council to organise a community event aimed at bringing residents together and encouraging pride in the local area.

The event will focus on promoting community safety, reducing litter and creating a cleaner environment for everyone to enjoy.

A spokesperson for Vernon Terrace Primary School said: "We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and commitment shown by our School Council members. They have embraced the opportunity to make a positive impact in their community and have demonstrated excellent leadership skills.

"Working alongside local councillors has given the children a valuable insight into how they can help shape the area where they live. We are excited to see the project develop and look forward to working with the wider community on future initiatives."

Members of the School Council said they are keen to play an active role in improving the neighbourhood and hope their efforts will inspire others to take positive action.

The project highlights the important role young people can play in shaping their communities while reflecting the school's commitment to developing responsible and active citizens.
