A primary school in Northampton has organised a food collection for a local charity as it is unable to attend Harvest services this year.

Children from St Andrew’s Primary School in Ecton Brook Road usually walk to the local church in Great Billing every year to celebrate Harvest with teachers and families.

However, due to the pandemic, this is unable to happen this year, but staff wanted to make sure the children were still aware of the occasion.

Pupils and their families were asked to donate non perishable food, such as tinned goods and pasta, which will then be donated to The Hope Centre.

Michelle Davidson, co-headteacher, said: “Children’s families usually come along to the services so there is a real community feel.

“That can’t happen this year, but we still wanted to collect the food and this year it is going to The Hope Centre as they were appealing for schools to do something to help.

“All years from Year R to Year 6 have been involved and staff have been very generous too.

“It has been really great to see the children coming into school with their bags feeling proud that they are helping a charity in their local community.”

The school has been overwhelmed with donations and more are still coming in.

Next week the goods will be donated to the charity that will utilise them in its work to support families by providing basic essentials.
