Primary school headteacher praised in national award celebrating excellence in education

Richard Camp, headteacher of Towcester CofE Primary School, was recognised in the Headteacher of the Year in a Primary School category of the 2015 Pearson Teaching Awards.

Mr Camp will now join fellow Silver Award winners at the UK final of the Teaching Awards to be held at London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on October 18, where 10 Silver Award winners will receive a Gold Plato Award.

The ceremony, titled “Britain’s Classroom Heroes”, will be filmed and broadcast by the BBC as a showcase of excellence in education.

Mr camp said: “I continue to be genuinely overwhelmed with this recognition, however it really is a whole school effort that has driven our performance over the past few years and I am certain that this award reflects just that.

“Our children are amazing and show great passion to learn, and our staff are committed to ensure that the learning environment is an exciting and varied one, and this is why I believe that Towcester Church of England Primary School has achieved various recognitions over the past few years which has really elevated our positioning in the local area.”

Julie Godwin, chair of governors, added: “When we originally heard that Richard had been recognised as a finalist at a national level we were truly delighted, and now that he has won the honour of being announced as a Silver Teaching Award winner we are all ecstatic – we know how much of a difference Richard has made to our school, and now this recognition really does reinforce that point.”

The children of Towcester Church of England Primary School helped to celebrate Mr Camp’s award at a surprise assembly which was also attended by parents and covernors, before creating their own human running track of which Mr Cam had to manage two laps of honour to a backdrop of cheering & clapping.

The school’s deputy headteacher, Jo Brown, said: “We are all so proud of Richard’s achievement and the children wanted to celebrate in their own creative & innovative way, hence the laps of honour.

“We all have our fingers crossed for the UK final in October, however regardless of the result on the night we know that Richard is the best Headteacher by far, so we are already winners,” she said.
