Northamptonshire schoolchildren live the dream with chance to play at Allianz Stadium

Pupils from a Northamptonshire school are hoping their unforgettable day at rugby's national stadium will prove a good omen for Northampton Saints this season.

Children from Long Buckby Junior School were given the opportunity to play at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, after being selected to take part in the Allianz Kick Start Programme.

The school was nominated by its rugby manager and joined pupils from across England for a day of rugby activities at one of the sport's most iconic venues.

The visit included matches on the famous pitch as well as an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the changing rooms.

Teacher Jenny Eltherington said the experience was particularly special given the school's close links to rugby and its admiration for Northampton Saints, who lifted the Premiership title in 2024.

She said: "We have been running a lunchtime rugby club for girls and have now added in some mixed T1 Rugby.

"All of our girls have now created a team at our local rugby club as well because they love it so much.

"It was such a surprise to get chosen to come to Allianz Stadium and all the students were very excited.

"We're hoping that Saints can get to the final here again this year so all the students can say that they played on the same pitch."

The school has been involved with the Allianz Kick Start programme over the past year, introducing pupils to T1 Rugby, a non-contact version of the game designed to encourage participation and teamwork.

Mrs Eltherington said the programme had become an important part of the school's sporting offer, helping children develop confidence, leadership and communication skills.

She added that older pupils had even taken on sports leadership roles, while members of the girls' team had helped teach the newer mixed groups.

The event was also attended by CBBC presenter Joe Tasker, who surprised pupils and joined in with activities throughout the day.

Tasker, who featured in one of the programme's educational videos, praised the accessibility of T1 Rugby and said it was a great way to introduce young people to the sport regardless of previous experience.

Allianz Kick Start is a six-week long programme designed to introduce primary school classes to T1 Rugby. A fun, non-contact form of rugby. Visit www.englandrugby.com for more information.
