A local study cafe that has been shut for over two months is planning to launch summer holiday catch up classes to help prepare children for a return to school life.

The Study Room Cafe, in Roe Road, Abington opened at the beginning of this year and offers maths and English tutoring for children, as well as classes to combat loneliness for older people.

However the coronavirus pandemic forced the new business to class on March 20 when schools across the country also shut.

Now Danni and Jordan Ayres, the owners of the business, are planning ahead to the summer holidays when they will host catch up classes.

Danni said: “On the day we found out about GCSE being cancelled we lost around 50 customers in one day, because children aren’t doing the exams so don’t need the tutoring.

“It made us unneeded. I have done some online lessons but we mainly planned for the future.

“We can’t open anything while schools are still offering an online programme, so the first week after the school term has ended we will start then."

On July 20, once the school term is over, Danni will begin hosting maths catch up classes in small groups of no more than six children.

Weekly lessons will be held for a number of different age groups, ranging from year two to year ten.

Danni is also hoping to extend to English catch up lessons, as well as helping prepare any children moving to a new school

The teacher and business woman added: “I’m hoping these catch up classes will open us up to new people.

“We will offer English too and we’ll offer more if the demand comes and if people ask for it.

“Maths is quite hard for children to teach themselves online so I will just remind them of all the key stuff in time for them to go back to school properly, which we hope will be in September.

“I’m hoping there will be a need for year sixes as well. They haven’t had the opportunity to prepare themselves for secondary school in the way they normally would.

“I’m a secondary school teacher and I have a good insight into what they need to be prepared for.”

Maths sessions will be held Mondays to Wednesdays and the Danni is hoping to secure an English tutor for Thursdays and Fridays in the school holidays.

The lessons are priced at £40 for six one-hour sessions.
