Northampton school praised as ‘among the very best nationally’ by Secretary of State for Education

A Northampton school has been praised as “among the very best nationally” by the Secretary of State for Education.

Congratulations were in order for The Duston School from Bridget Phillipson MP, who commended the “excellent outcomes the disadvantaged pupils achieved at the end of the 2024/25 academic year”.

The message read: “Your school’s performance places it among the very best nationally, and this is a significant achievement.

“This success reflects the dedication of your staff and the hard work of your pupils. It shows what can be achieved when ambition and commitment come together. Thank you for everything you do to give children the best possible opportunities to succeed.

“Your school’s achievements demonstrate what is possible, and I hope you will continue to share your experience and best practice with others. Even the strongest schools can go further.”

Principal Sam Strickland was encouraged to lead the way in sharing effective practice, championing networks, supporting collaboration and helping raise standards across the sector.

The MP asked the principal to pass on her thanks and congratulations to staff and pupils, and that she looks forward to working with the school as “we strive together to raise standards for all”.

“Receiving this accolade from the Secretary of State is hugely humbling,” Sam told the Chronicle & Echo. “It is a triumph for the community we serve.

“It is absolute validation of the hard work and dedication that the senior team, the staff and the trust board engage in. Huge praise goes to our pupils and families.

“We always endeavour to work inclusively and have the highest expectations of and for the children we serve. The greatest gift we can give children are life-changing academic outcomes coupled with the skills to move into adult life and the world of work.

“This recognition serves as validation of how we have worked relentlessly to transform the fortunes of The Duston School. Given the school is a giant 2000 plus all-through school this has been all the more challenging.”
