Northampton primary school awarded for dedication to teaching children during coronavirus pandemic

A Northampton primary school has been named as a 'Rose of Northamptonshire' for its dedication to teaching children during the coronavirus pandemic.

Briar Hill Primary School has been rewarded in the scheme set up by Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff and county council to thank the heroes of the past 12 months.

Janey Cooksley, head teacher at the school on Thorn Hill, said: “We are humbled and delighted to have been presented with the Rose of Northamptonshire award.

"Our staff, students, and parents have been incredible over the last year in making sure that our community remains safe and that our education is accessible to all of our students no matter their situation.

"To be recognised for that hard work by the community itself is a wonderful feeling. We will continue to do everything we can to serve our community and keep them safe in the coming weeks and months.”

The awards are part of the Unsung Heroes of Northamptonshire initiative, where members of the public can nominate individuals or organisations whom they think deserve recognition.

Due to the lockdown an in-person event cannot take place, but a certificate will be posted to the school and a virtual presentation will follow.

Briar Hill Primary School is part of the David Ross Education Trust and its chief executive, Stuart Burns, congratulated the staff and pupils for the 'fantastic' award.

"Across the David Ross Education Trust, safety has been and continues to be the top priority for us, and despite all the challenges they have faced, our schools have responded swiftly and effectively to protect their communities.

"For Janey and her to be recognised in this way is testament to their brilliant work to serve their school and wider community, and their commitment to that collective goal.”
