On Friday the 14th of November, St. Andrew’s CEVA Primary School were visited by Mike Reader, the Labour MP for Northampton South.

During his visit, Mr. Reader spoke to the children about his role as an MP, the differences he would like to make to Northampton and the importance of democracy. The children excitedly took part in a vote similar to the Houses of Parliament, before the Year 5 and 6 children spent some time asking Mr. Reader a range of questions.

During his talk with the Year 5 and 6’s, Mr. Reader spoke to them about the ways we can keep our environment safe. One of the questions asked by the children was – How can you help homeless people? Mr. Reader answered and said that he helps homeless people by guiding them to a place to stay.

Mr. Reader shared with the children that being an MP is hard because some people send mean letters about him, so he is trying his best to ignore it.

Sarah and Zara from Year 6 both said, 'It was fascinating to learn about our MP and how he keeps us all safe.'

Headeacher, Val Griffiths, said 'We were delighted to welcome Mike to our school as part of the work we are doing for Parliament Week. It is important for the children to understand how he represents them on a local and national level and have an appreciation of how democracy works in our country. The children asked a range of questions about concerns that he answered well to help them understand the processes of change.”
