Meet the 17-year-old student running a non-profit tuition business alongside his sixth form studies in Northampton

Meet the 17-year-old student running a non-profit tuition business alongside his sixth form studies in Northampton.

Elijah Slater is the founder of Hunsbury Tuition and from this month, he has decided to donate all profits to support a school and college in Uganda to have as big of an impact as he can.

The 17-year-old has been running his business for almost a year while in sixth form at Wootton Park School and after spending almost two weeks volunteering in Uganda recently, he decided to do all he can to help as a little goes a long way.

Elijah tutored for another company before he decided to launch Hunsbury Tuition, with the aim of helping people do well at GCSE level through an affordable, one-to-one and personable service.

Though the focus is English and Maths, Hunsbury Tuition assists with all GCSE subjects and Elijah is passionate about offering tuition “the way it should be done” by avoiding group sessions.

The founder works alongside four other Wootton Park sixth form students who he took on board, and he was asked why he decided to make the business non-profit from December 2025.

“I went to Uganda for 12 days in October as part of a charity trip,” Elijah told the Chronicle & Echo. “I visited the school and college in the village to see what it’s all about. I saw the impact that even a bit of money can have.

“That motivated me to do it as you can feed, house and educate a child for one day for a pound. It has a massive difference and will help them be able to go to college and get a job. It’s powerful and I wanted to be part of it.”

Tutees have praised how effective the tuition is in giving them confidence and enhancing their ability, as well as how friendly and welcoming the whole team of students are.

The tutors build a connection on a one-to-one level with tutees and Elijah said: “It’s a lot more than just helping them get better grades, it’s about connection and enjoying their studies as much as possible.”

Not only is Elijah an ambitious entrepreneur at just 17 years old, but he is currently studying history, English, politics and Spanish at A Level and has applied to Oxford University to study Spanish and linguistics. He has already set his sights on doing a masters and PhD in linguistics, with a view to working in the education sector in the future.
