An educational trust that is responsible for a number of schools across Northamptonshire has invested heavily to improve premises.

East Midlands Academy Trust, which runs five schools in the county and two in Milton Keynes, has already completed a number of improvement projects, with more due to be finished by the end of 2020.

As part of the £2.5 million spending, a new roof has been fitted on Stimpson Avenue Academy in Abington, as the building is more than 125 years old.

Northampton International Academy in Barrack Road has benefitted from new teaching space that will accommodate an extra 120 pupils in ‘bludge years’, where the school is asked to provide for the additional demand from the local area.

The Semilong school has also been given an alternative education provision for pupils at risk of exclusion, as well as improved sixth form facilities.

According to the trust, the costs have been covered by its financial reserves as part of its long term capital investment strategy, as well as some funding from the Government.

Joshua Coleman, chief executive of East Midlands Academy Trust, said: “We are committed to investing in our schools to ensure our pupils have the resources they need to become the best they can be.

“While our fantastic staff are undoubtedly our best asset, we are making this significant investment to improve our existing facilities and develop new facilities to enable our staff to provide the very best teaching within modern, inspiring learning space.

“It is also a reflection of our growth as a trust, with work to accommodate a further 120 pupils at Northampton International Academy and the creation of an alternative education department to support students across the county who are at risk of exclusion.

“I am delighted with the improvements we have already implemented and look forward to seeing the completion of these works by the end of the year.”
