A-level results day 2020: Moulton School students and staff frustrated at lower-than-expected grades

Frustration at lower-than-expected A-level results is shared by students and staff at Moulton School and Science College today (Thursday, August 13).

Two years of work has been decided by a calculated grade as the usual exams were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, with pupils able to appeal or take resits.

The Pound Lane school's acting head teacher, Angie Dabbs, said they will support students who wish to appeal but does not think many will take resits in the autumn as they would have to delay going to university or starting an apprenticeship.

"Not all students have received the grades we believe they were capable of achieving and we understand and share that frustration today," she said.

"Staff will do everything they can to support appeals over the coming weeks.

"In the meantime, I hope students can celebrate their hard work and enjoy some time with family and friends."

Dr Dabbs said students had shown positivity, resilience, and ambition for their futures during an extremely challenging few months since the Covid-19 lockdown.

The acting head teacher said they are incredibly proud of their achievements and the way in which they have endured the results process forced upon them.

Staff are also sad not to be able to celebrate on site with pupils this morning as usual but they wish them the very best for the future.

"We are delighted that so many of our students get to follow the next stage of their preferred learning journeys," she said.

"I’d like to thank staff for all their dedication and hard work and, of course, parents, for their commitment and support during these strange times."
