Nine-year-old Louie Roe from Northampton is making an incredible impact in support of Young Epilepsy after his own diagnosis with epilepsy last August.

Louie has taken on the “26 miles in 26 days” challenge throughout March, committing to running, walking, or cycling one mile every single day. His final mile will take place on Thursday 26th March, marking Purple Day, the international day for epilepsy awareness.

Young Epilepsy, the charity Louie is fundraising for, works to improve the lives of children and young people living with epilepsy. They provide specialist education, health services, and research, as well as vital support for families navigating the condition. Their mission is to ensure that no child with epilepsy is limited by their diagnosis. They also provide support and training for schools to ensure that people supporting young people have the awareness and information required.

Louie’s challenge has not only been about fundraising but also about raising awareness. His parents have supported him every step of the way, using the opportunity to help Louie feel more confident talking about his condition with others—something which is hugely important, as many people still know very little about epilepsy.

This has led to Louie's challenge becoming a real community effort. Louie made a speech to his class about his condition and they all rallied behind him, sending a letter to the head teacher asking if they could help support Louie. This has led to pupils across the whole school joining in by running and walking miles alongside him during the school day. The school will also be “wearing purple to show they care” on Purple Day, helping to spread awareness even further.

So far, Louie has raised a massive £1,064, far exceeding his original target of £300 which is a testament to both his determination and the support everyone.
