Led by Choices Adviser Louise Troy, from the Shaw Trust, the project introduced participants to the Green Spaces Semilong Community Garden, where they learned about the vital role green spaces play in supporting mental wellbeing, physical health, and even reducing mortality rates. The sessions encouraged young people to reimagine urban environments and consider how neglected or vandalised areas can be turned into places of pride and healing.
One of the most striking outcomes of the project was the transformation of a tagged wall into a vibrant mural. The group discussed the impact of tagging and vandalism on community morale and safety, and then worked together to reclaim the space through art. The mural was designed and led by artist Alex Lockhart, whose vision brought colour and meaning to the previously defaced wall.
Construction skills were taught by Jethro Travill, and the project was beautifully documented by photographer Jack Savage, capturing the energy, collaboration, and transformation that took place.
Walls of Change was funded by the Town Council, using the remaining funds from the Create Careers project. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when young people are empowered to shape their environment — and help shape their communities.
