A Northampton woman who underwent brain surgery in 2023 is preparing to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon this April to raise vital funds for brain tumour research. Sara, who had 80% of a benign brain tumour removed in June 2023 is now monitored with 6 monthly scans and is determined to turn her experience into something positive.

After an accidental fall in early 2023, having had no symptoms, the medical scans identified that Sara had a brain tumour. She underwent major surgery in June 2023 during which surgeons removed 80% of the tumour. Since then, she has been recovering well but continues to be monitored with regular MRI scans.

Sara went on to study a MSc in Genomic Medicine which included a research project into brain tumours. Her personal experience has increased her motivations to learn more in this area and increase awareness of the diagnosis of brain tumours.

Now, less than 3 years later, she is planning to take part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon to raise money for Brain Tumour Research - a charity close to her heart both personally and academically.

"Going through a brain tumour diagnosis and surgery was terrifying, but it also showed me how vital research is", Sara said. "I've studied brain tumours, I live with one, and now I want to help fund the research that gives people like me hope".

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer, yet historically receive only a small percentage of national cancer research funding. Sara hopes her story will raise awareness as well as funds.

She hopes the Northampton community will support her as she trains for the 13.1 mile challenge.
