Northampton Gilbert & Sullivan Group presents: Iolanthe, a magical battle between fairies and parliament takes to the stage

The Northampton Gilbert & Sullivan Group is delighted to present its upcoming production of Iolanthe, one of the most cherished comic operas by Gilbert and Sullivan. Bursting with sparkling wit, glorious melodies, and a fantastical collision between fairy magic and political power, Iolanthe promises an unforgettable evening of entertainment for audiences of all ages.
First performed in 1882, Iolanthe remains as fresh and relevant today as ever. The story follows Strephon, an Arcadian shepherd who is half‑fairy and half‑mortal, whose forbidden love for the spirited Phyllis unleashes chaos in both Fairyland and the Houses of Parliament.
With inept peers, fairies in full voice, and pointed political satire that still resonates, this enchanting operetta showcases the timeless brilliance of Gilbert’s humour and Sullivan’s luminous score.
This brand new production, under the direction of Leon Berger and musical direction of David Chambers, brims with energy, colourful costumes, and a unique take on this loved well classic to bring these iconic characters vividly to life. From the majestic entrance of the Fairy Queen to the not so stately comedic procession of the House of Lords, audiences can expect an evening rich with laughter, charm, and spectacle.
