Northampton Musical Theatre Youth (NMTC Youth) are striking a powerful chord as rehearsals ramp up for their upcoming production of School of Rock the Musical.

Walking into the rehearsal room feels less like a quiet practice session and more like stepping onto the set of Fame. Guitar cases lean against walls, drumsticks tap nervously on knees, and excited chatter hums beneath the sound of live music as young performers throw themselves into the work with infectious energy.

As rehearsals gather pace, it’s clear this is no ordinary youth production. With live instruments played by the cast themselves, inventive staging and a supportive company culture built on confidence and care, School of Rock is shaping up to be something special.

The show, based on the hit film, follows wannabe rock star Dewey Finn as he poses as a substitute teacher and transforms a class of straight-laced pupils into a full-blown rock band. Beneath the electric guitars and high-octane numbers lies a heart-warming story about self-belief, teamwork and finding your voice — themes that resonate strongly with NMTC Youth’s own ethos.

I first saw the company perform Oliver! at the Cripps Hall Theatre two years ago and was blown away by the slick ensemble work and sheer energy on stage. What’s striking this time is seeing that same level of commitment backstage, where enthusiasm and focus buzz just as loudly as the music.

NMTC Youth is run entirely by volunteers, with a core team of seven working behind the scenes. Directors Katy Batchelor and Hannah Taylor juggle rehearsals alongside busy professional lives, supported by musical director Rod Lliffe, who was in full flow during rehearsals. Together, they are united by a shared aim: to give young people in Northamptonshire access to high-quality theatre experiences.

From devising original visual concepts to nurturing confidence as much as performance polish, the months of creative graft are driven by collective pride — and the belief that these young performers can truly rock the stage.
