Last roll of the mat as bowls club in Northampton set to close after 47 years at heart of community

There will be one final roll of the mat at Duston Community Centre on Monday February 23, as Cotswold Bowls Club closes after 47 years at the heart of the Duston community.

Founded in 1979 as an offshoot of Cotswold Road Bowling Club, the club was created to give working players the chance to enjoy the game after a day’s work.

What began as a practical solution soon became something much more — a weekly ritual of friendship, gentle rivalry and shared laughter.

Every Monday morning from 10am to 12pm, the short mats were carefully laid out, the woods lined up, and the kettle quietly boiled in the background. Players of all abilities took part, from complete beginners to seasoned bowlers competing in the Northamptonshire Short Mat Bowls Association League. For many, it was more than a game; it was a social lifeline.

But after nearly five decades, the club has reached the end of its run. With no volunteers stepping forward to take on management duties, members have made the difficult decision to close. The equipment has now been sold, and the familiar routine will soon be no more.

The final session will be marked with a small party, giving members past and present the chance to share memories — of close ends, near misses, league matches and the simple joy of keeping active together.

For 47 years, Cotswold Bowls Club has been part of Duston’s quiet story — a place where friendships were formed across a short mat on Pendle Road. On February 23, the woods will come to rest for the last time, but the memories will roll on.
