In Memoriam: Richard Edwards, former Headteacher of Nicholas Hawksmoor Primary School

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Edwards, who served as Headteacher of Nicholas Hawksmoor Primary School in Towcester from Easter 1990 until 2013.
During his 23 years of distinguished leadership, Richard established Nicholas Hawksmoor Primary School as one of the top primary schools in the country, building an outstanding reputation through exceptional academic standards and extraordinary opportunities in the arts and sports. He named the school after the famous architect whose work can be seen at the nearby Hesketh Estate and Stowe, reflecting his deep appreciation for excellence in design and culture.
Richard was deeply passionate about arts education, creating a rich programme that gave children transformative experiences. Pupils danced before masterpieces at the National Gallery and also at the Royal Albert Hall, worked with the Royal Academy of Art, and attended performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Opera, and the Royal Ballet. His vision inspired many students to pursue careers in the artistic professions, leaving a lasting impact that continues to resonate with former pupils today.
His commitment to the community extended beyond the classroom. Richard requisitioned the Pocket Park and commissioned its pond as an additional learning space, which now hosts Forest School activities. He opened the school extensively to serve as a home for local Music and Rock School programmes and added a dance drama studio that continues to benefit hundreds of children through performing arts, drama, and ballet classes.
Following his retirement, Richard remained actively involved in education, joining the Headteacher Board at the Department for Education, serving as a Member of The Hawksmoor Learning Trust, and becoming a governor at his local primary school in Greatworth. His influence and values continue to shape the school and trust today.
Richard will be remembered as an educational leader who championed the arts at a time when many schools were narrowly focused on league tables. He believed in providing children with extraordinary experiences that opened their minds to opportunity and possibility. The children and families of Towcester have much to thank him for.
A funeral service will be held at St Lawrence's Church, Towcester, on Wednesday, 10th December at 2:00 pm.
Richard leaves behind a remarkable legacy in education and a school community that will continue to honour his memory and vision for years to come.
