Hope is louder than desperation, love is more visible than hatred and community is our greatest strength

The importance of loving our neighbours, service to others and mutual respect were common themes in a lively service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity on Sunday 25th January 2026. Those taking part were all determined to build peace and understanding in Northampton.

The event, which brought together people from churches in the town and surrounding villages, was organised by Churches Together in Northampton. The service was led by ten clergy from the different Christian traditions in a visible demonstration of shared beliefs and common values.

Also present were civic leaders including the Lord-Lieutenant, the Mayor of Northampton, the Chair of West Northamptonshire Council and leaders from the political parties in West Northamptonshire Council.

In his address, the Lord-Lieutenant commented: ‘We are living in times of heightened tension when trust and respect between different communities and groups is under great pressure’. After quoting from the King’s Christmas address, which highlighted the shared values the King observes across the country, the Lord-Lieutenant continued: ‘Churches and faith communities are absolutely vital in bringing together individuals and groups across Northampton, improving social cohesion and contributing to the prosperity and wellbeing of our town and county.

‘None of this would be possible without the selfless dedication of hundreds of volunteers who sustain churches & faith communities. Your contribution is making such a significant contribution to social cohesion.Thank you for everything and keep up the good work!’

Colin Wilkinson, inducted for a second year as Moderator of Churches Together in Northampton, responded: ‘I truly believe that, when faith communities walk together and when churches share the power of the risen Christ and serve not themselves but their neighbours, then our town can continue to be prosperous not only in economy but also in spirit, rich in community, strong in care and known for looking after one another.’

Revd Adam Eakins gave the address during the service and commented afterwards: ‘It was an incredible joy to be asked to speak at the Churches Together in Northampton service, joining with churches, civic leaders, and other faith leaders from across the town in vibrant, united worship. The atmosphere was alive with faith and anticipation, showcasing our shared passion to see Northampton transformed and encouraged by the hope with have in Jesus.’

Jane Birch, Mayor of Northampton, commented: 'I was delighted to attend the service to mark the election of Colin Wilkinson as the Moderator of Churches Together in Northampton. The words spoken by representatives of the faith groups were uplifting, giving inspiration and hope for the continued care, compassion and spiritual guidance shown by the town's church leaders. It was a powerful example of the dedicated work throughout the town that brings people together in peace and harmony.'

Councillor James Petter, Deputy Leader of West Northamptonshire Council, commented: ‘The service at Abington Avenue URC, organised by Churches Together in Northampton, was a reminder of the importance of coming together, unity over division, and service over self-interest. In a world that can feel increasingly fragmented, that message matters.

‘Faith communities play a vital role in our town, not only in spiritual life, but through the quiet, practical support they give to individuals, families, and the wider community’, James Petter concluded.

Churches Together in Northampton aims to support churches in faith-based discussion of topical issues affecting the town, working with other Christian groups such as ‘Love Northampton’, as well as civic leaders and other faith groups.

‘This is a time for bold Christian initiatives to strengthen communities and to ensure that all residents in Northampton experience respect and goodwill’, Colin Wilkinson continued. ‘Churches Together in Northampton will continue to pray that hope will be louder than desperation and love more visible than hatred, and to support churches that are working to strengthen our sense of community under the love of God’, Colin concluded.
