Staff at a national firm whose head office is based in Oxfordshire have vowed to help find a cure for brain tumours inspired by two colleagues who have been affected by the disease.

Employees of Dalcour Maclaren, a utility and infrastructure consultancy which has 20 offices across the UK and Republic of Ireland, have pledged to fundraise and raise awareness of this important cause during a new partnership with the charity Brain Tumour Research.

More than 500 employees will help find a cure for all types of brain tumours. The Dalcour Maclaren team will take part in a huge range of fundraising and awareness events throughout 2025 and beyond. In March, all workers spread across the UK and Ireland will don their best headgear for the charity’s flagship event, Wear A Hat Day.

Senior Business Support Coordinator, Sam, 31 from Brackley, Northamptonshire, who works in the head office, nominated the charity and has signed up to run the Oxford Half in October.

She said: “I lost my mum to a glioblastoma in 2020. She was diagnosed as an emergency after displaying some unusual symptoms. Everything happened quickly and she died three months after her tumour was discovered. At the time, I also found the Brain Tumour Research website which was informative. I was shocked to read that just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to brain tumours since records began in 2002. I want to do more and was thrilled when the charity was voted for by my colleagues.”

Surveyor, Vicki, from Warwickshire, has worked at Dalcour Maclaren for nine years. In 2019 she was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma and has since undergone CyberKnife radiotherapy and a multi-hour operation to debulk her tumour.

Next month, Vicki is taking part in the Brain Tumour Research 10k Steps a Day in February challenge.

She said: “I live with tinnitus, dry eye, and have lost all hearing in my right ear but I am so grateful that’s all that’s changed for me right now. This brilliant partnership will shine a light on this disease and to the lack of funding for research into brain tumours. I’m looking forward to seeing how we can positively support the brain tumour community.”

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.

Dalcour Maclaren CEO, James Neil, said: “I am delighted we have chosen to partner with Brain Tumour Research this year. This is a fantastic charity focused on finding a cure for this truly horrific disease and, like many, I have lost friends to brain tumours.

“So, the challenge is set, and Dalcour Maclaren and the amazing ONETEAM will do its utmost to raise as much as we can throughout 2025.”

Dan Knowles, CEO of Brain Tumour Research, said: “We’re incredibly proud to have the support of Dalcour Maclaren and look forward to supporting their fundraising activities over the coming year. We’re grateful for the bravery and generosity of Sam and Vicki in sharing their story with us. One in three people knows someone affected by brain tumours, they can affect anyone at any age and there are more than 100 different types of brain tumour, making them notoriously difficult to find effective treatments for.”

“We’re determined to change that but it’s only by working together with game-changing organisations, we will be able to improve treatment options for patients and, ultimately, find a cure for this devastating disease.”

Brain Tumour Research funds sustainable research at dedicated centres in the UK. It also campaigns for the Government and larger cancer charities to invest more in research into brain tumours in order to speed up new treatments for patients and, ultimately, to find a cure. The charity is the driving force behind the call for a national annual spend of £35 million in order to improve survival rates and patient outcomes in line with other cancers such as breast cancer and leukaemia.
