A new history of Boughton Village

A new book is published, celebrating the long and varied history of an important Northamptonshire village.
A former chairman of Boughton Parish Council, Member and Chairman of Northamptonshire County Council and currently Alderman of West Northamptonshire, JUDY SHEPHARD announces the publication of her seminal, 330 page book, “All About Boughton”, the village in which she has lived for some 70 years.
The village of Boughton existed well before the Domesday Book and the story starts in pagan times. Judy introduces lords of the manor who shaped its development, rebel Catholic dissenters and plagues of wild rabbits. She explains how the old church was abandoned, of an old abbess, evicted by Henry VIII, retired to the village, of an imprisoned king bathing in the secret grotto and Boughton’s links with the gunpowder plot.
Judy tells of the follies of Boughton, evicted cottagers, fire and epidemics and the sale of the estate; of the ancient fair with its revelries and murders and the village war heroes, rectors, publicans, farmers and millers.
The reader is taken inside the village clubs, including those featuring pigs and cricket, and of the militia, home guard and enjoy the royal visits, and chuckle when a notorious Hollywood actor dropped in and kissed almost every blushing woman in Boughton! This is a 'must read' for anyone interested in local history and the development of an important Northamptonshire village.
"All About Boughton" is now available at the price of £15 direct from the author who may be contacted: [email protected], 07889 123039.
