Weston Favell Shopping Centre speaks out after seeing a 'high rate' of shoppers ignoring lockdown rules

Weston Favell Shopping centre in Northampton is calling for the local community to show their support in reducing the spread of COVID-19 after seeing a “high rate” of shoppers ignoring government advice.

The shopping centre introduced a range of safety measures including a one-way system, encouraging customers to wear appropriate face coverings and a two-metre social distancing rule where possible.

They have additionally introduced queuing areas for stores that have reached capacity within so that shoppers can wait safely to one side before entering the premises.

Capacity limits were set for each individual store as well as the shopping centre as a whole. Weston Favell Shopping centre, to comply with these limits, are asking people to shop alone where they can and avoid coming to the centre in groups or with family members who can stay at home.

Staff, however, are still seeing many groups and families coming in to do their shopping. They are also seeing people use the centre as a location to complete their daily exercise. This means that others miss out on carrying out their essential shopping due to capacity limits being reached and entrances having to be closed off.

A spokesperson for Weston Favell Shopping centre said: “Local authorities have been patrolling the centre and will continue to offer their support by handing out fines to those who do not comply with the government guidelines. The shopping centre fully backs this as they have a duty to protect their staff, the public and tenants in the centre.

“Weston Favell Shopping centre asks the question ‘Is your visit necessary?’ The centre is there to offer essential daily and weekly items to the public, so if you can order online or can make do without for the time being, then please stay at home and give people who really need to visit the centre, a chance to shop safely.”
