Weston Favell Shopping Centre is offering to make face coverings for customers and handing out masks for free when they become mandatory in shops from tomorrow (Friday, July 24).

Shoppers can have their clean, cotton material like bedsheets or pillowcases turned into up to two masks per person for free on a first-come, first-served basis with an optional donation to Weston Favell Food Bank.

The shopping centre will also be providing a small quantity of free disposable face masks for those who do not have one tomorrow and on Saturday.

These are subject to availability and only one mask per person will be given out if required but they will be asked to remember their own appropriate face covering on their next visit.

"Weston Favell Shopping centre are encouraging shoppers to get on board with this new guidance when coming to the shopping centre, to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus," a spokesperson said.

As of tomorrow, government guidelines state wearing an appropriate face covering in shops and supermarkets in England is mandatory but it is up to the businesses to enforce.

Individual retailers at Weston Favell Shopping Centre will have their own rules for this but the centre will be 'offering encouragement' to shoppers to wear one at entrances and throughout the mall.

The shopping centre remained open during lockdown to allow shoppers to access essentials but the rest of the businesses have since re-opened, meaning footfall is on the rise.

To reduce the risks of Covid-19 being spread, a one-way system has been implemented throughout the mall to ensure shoppers are continuing to adhere to a two-metre distance, where possible.
