'We're still open and committed to serving the community' - Independent Northampton business appeals for support after closure of neighbouring charity

An independent Northampton business is appealing for support from shoppers, after the closure of a neighbouring charity, which has affected footfall.

Daily Bread, which has traded from its Bedford Road site for more than four decades, is a a workers’ co-operative, owned and run by the people who work there. It offers wholefoods, bulk buying, refills, ethical household and body-care products and locally sourced items.

Neighbouring charity, Workbridge, which was part of St Andrew’s Healthcare, closed for good in late 2025, which has inevitably affected footfall on the site.

John Clarke, long-standing Daily Bread Member said: “We want to be very clear, Daily Bread is still open, still trading, and still committed to serving the community, but independent, community-owned businesses like ours only survive if people actively choose to use them. Community support really matters right now.

“When people shop here, they know exactly where their money is going. It stays local, it supports fairly paid work, it supports ethical producers and a calmer, more human way of shopping. That’s something we’re incredibly proud of and something worth protecting.

“It really is a case of ‘use us or lose us’. We’re here, we want to stay, and with the community behind us, we can.”

Sarah Muddiman, Daily Bread staff member added: “Workbridge has been part of the fabric of this place for a long time. Its closure affects more than buildings, it affects people, livelihoods and community connections. We’re feeling that impact too.”

Daily Bread is encouraging local residents to support through their everyday shopping, particularly as many people take part in Veganuary or look to make healthier food choices in the new year.

“Veganuary isn’t new to us. Whole, plant-based food has always been at the heart of what we do,” added Sarah. “If people are looking to eat more healthily or ethically this January, choosing to do that at Daily Bread can make a real difference.”

The business is asking Northampton residents to choose Daily Bread for their regular food shopping where possible, support local, independent and worker-owned businesses and spread the word that Daily Bread is still open and needs community support.

Daily Bread is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, and Saturday 9am to 5pm.
