The new building is likely to be constructed next to it existing 625,000 square foot distribution centre at Prologis Park Pineham and will eventually house Sainsbury's national frozen food distribution centre.

But the move will be subject to the company gaining planning approval from Northampton Borough Council.

Managing director for Prologis UK, Andrew Griffiths, said: “We have been working with Sainsbury’s for many years, so we are delighted that the company has decided to expand its facilities at Prologis Park Pineham.

“By investing in the second phase of the park, we have been able to offer Sainsbury’s an opportunity that meets the company’s exact requirements.”

If planning permission is gained, construction of the facility would start in spring, 2017.

The new Sainsbury’s frozen food distribution centre will be the first building on the second phase of Prologis Park Pineham, by junction 15a of the M1.

The site has planning permission for a total of 1.1 million square feet of industrial usage.
