Public meeting to discuss parking problems in Northampton

Councillor Gareth Eales said commuters and sports fans cause a lack of available parking space for people living in St James.

He has arranged a meeting at the Doddridge Centre on Thursday evening (September 15) so that ideas to help solve the problem can be discussed.

Councillor Eales said: "Car parking is a daily problem in my part of St James.

"Commuter parking creates a gross shortage of parking for residents, as does match-day parking.

"The ongoing and planned removal of defunct double yellow will help create spaces, but we need a real solution to the fundamental problems."

The meeting, which begins at 7pm, will see Northamptonshire County Council Highways officers in attendance as well as a representative of Northampton Saints, who pull in up to 15,000 fans to the streets around Franklin's Gardens for a home match.

Topics covered will include permit parking and time-restricted parking, one-way systems and chevron parking and whether different street should have different measures.

Councillor Eales said: "We'd also like to explore what actions other stakeholders could implement to alleviate the parking pressures on residents. I'm hoping this meeting will be successful."
