Popular sandwich shop proud of third successful giveaway with 1,700 items collected for Northampton charity

A popular business is proud to have hosted its third successful giveaway to celebrate National Sandwich Day, with more than 1,700 items collected for a Northampton charity.

Spread, located in Adnitt Road, Abington, was founded by business owner Amy Adams at the start of 2023.

It was in November 2023 when Amy established this annual kind gesture of giving away hundreds of sandwiches as a thank you to customers for their continued support. This year, she decided to introduce a heartwarming twist by spreading the impact to the wider community.

The National Sandwich Day giveaway was once again a roaring success on November 2, and it was hosted in connection with the Hope Centre with the motto ‘your kindness is your currency’.

Everyone who came to claim a free sandwich was asked to bring a donation for the Hope Centre. Visitors were welcome to bring as much or as little as they wanted, as long as each person had at least one donation.

Spread encouraged the donation of tinned or dry foods, toiletries, sanitary products, baby products, hats, scarves, gloves, blankets and socks.

Reflecting on last month’s giveaway, Amy told the Chronicle & Echo: “It was honestly amazing. People turned up half an hour before opening, and the queue went down the street and around the corner.

“There was such a nice vibe in the air and good energy. It was nice to do it for a purpose, as everyone had done their good deed and we rewarded them. We gave away 363 sandwiches and collected 1,709 items for the Hope Centre.”

Visitors praised the Spread team for the “amazing” idea to collect donations for a worthy cause in exchange for the freebies.

Amy said: “Near Christmas, it’s on a lot of people’s minds to do a positive thing and help those less fortunate than ourselves.

“I really didn’t know how it would go as everyone had to put effort in to receive the sandwiches. People responded so well and we’re lucky to have such a good community. We come up with crazy ideas and they all get on board and want to be part of it.

“People were dropping donations off earlier in the week who could not come along on National Sandwich Day. Our customers really came through for us.”

The Hope Centre team were “so grateful” for the 1,709 items collected for them, and could not believe how much the Spread community had donated.

Amy says the Northampton community can expect the fourth National Sandwich Day giveaway in late 2026, and the charity aspect will be carried forward after the positive response in November.
